What is Accord Glyceryl Trinitrate (GTN)?
Accord Glyceryl Trinitrate (GTN) 500mcg tablets are a fast-acting sublingual medication (dissolved under the tongue) used for the immediate relief and prevention of angina pectoris (chest pain). The active ingredient, Glyceryl Trinitrate, belongs to a group of medicines called nitrates, which act as potent vasodilators.
How It Works
GTN works by relaxing and widening the blood vessels (veins and arteries). This process:
- Improves blood and oxygen flow to the heart muscle.
- Reduces the heart's workload, making it easier for it to pump blood.
- Provides "sharp relief" from chest pain within 1 to 5 minutes.
How to Use Accord GTN Tablets
These tablets are designed for sublingual use only.
- Place one tablet under your tongue or in the pouch of your cheek at the first sign of an angina attack.
- Allow the tablet to dissolve naturally. Do not swallow or chew the tablet, as this will reduce its effectiveness.
- Sit down and rest while the medication takes effect.
- If the pain does not subside within 5 minutes, you may take a second dose. If pain persists after 3 doses (15 minutes), seek emergency medical attention immediately.
Safety and Storage
Accord Glyceryl Trinitrate is a Prescription Only Medicine (POM). Always consult your doctor or GoMed pharmacist before use, especially if you are taking medications for erectile dysfunction (PDE5 inhibitors) or have low blood pressure.
- Pregnancy: If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult a healthcare professional before use.
- Storage: GTN tablets are sensitive to light and moisture. Keep them in the original amber glass bottle and ensure the cap is tightly closed. Discard any remaining tablets 8 weeks after opening the bottle.
