Artesun 120mg Injection – Gold-Standard Severe Malaria Treatment
Artesun 120mg Injection is a life-saving antimalarial medication containing artesunate. It is the WHO-recommended first-line treatment for severe or complicated malaria, including cerebral malaria, in both adults and children. Manufactured by Fosun Pharma (Guilin Pharmaceutical), it was the first injectable artesunate to receive WHO Prequalification.
How It Works
Artesunate is a water-soluble derivative of artemisinin. It works by rapidly reducing the parasite load in the blood. Because it acts much faster than other antimalarials, it is the primary choice for emergency cases where the patient cannot take oral medication.
Active Ingredient
- Artesunate: 120mg per vial.
Usage and Administration
Artesun 120mg must be administered by a qualified healthcare professional. It is given via:
- Intravenous (IV) injection
- Intramuscular (IM) injection
Important: Following the initial injection treatment, a full 3-day course of an oral Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy (ACT) must be started as soon as the patient is able to swallow.
Precautions & Safety
- Clinical Use Only: This product is for hospital use and must not be self-administered.
- Pregnancy: It is used in all trimesters for severe malaria as the benefit of saving the mother's life outweighs potential risks.
- Monitoring: Patients should be monitored for potential side effects such as delayed hemolytic anemia.
