What is Bacqure (Imipenem and Cilastatin)?
Bacqure is a potent, broad-spectrum intravenous (IV) antibiotic combination used to treat various severe bacterial infections. It contains two active ingredients: Imipenem (500mg) and Cilastatin (500mg). Imipenem belongs to the carbapenem class of antibiotics, which are known for their ability to kill a wide range of bacteria by inhibiting their cell wall synthesis.
Cilastatin is included to protect the imipenem. It is a renal dehydropeptidase inhibitor that prevents the kidneys from breaking down imipenem, ensuring the medicine stays active in your body and reaches effective concentrations in the urine.
Indications and Uses
Bacqure is typically reserved for serious or complicated infections where other antibiotics might not be effective. In Nigeria, it is commonly used for:
- Severe Pneumonia: Including hospital-acquired infections.
- Intra-abdominal Infections: Complex infections in the stomach or gut area.
- Septicemia: Serious blood infections (blood poisoning).
- Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Complicated cases affecting the kidneys or bladder.
- Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Deep or severe bacterial skin issues.
- Gynecological Infections: Serious infections of the female reproductive system.

Bacqure 500mg is provided as a sterile powder in a single-use vial and must be reconstituted by a healthcare professional for intravenous infusion. It is usually infused over 20 to 60 minutes.
- Storage: Store the dry powder below 30°C and protect it from direct light.
