Coartem Dispersible 20/120mg (6 Tablets) for Children
Coartem Dispersible is a specialized pediatric antimalarial medication manufactured by Novartis. It is a fixed-dose Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy (ACT) containing Artemether (20mg) and Lumefantrine (120mg). This 6-tablet pack is specifically designed for infants and young children weighing between 5kg and less than 15kg.
Effective Treatment for Pediatric Malaria
Malaria can progress quickly in children. Coartem Dispersible is formulated to clear malaria parasites rapidly from the blood. Unlike standard tablets, these are dispersible, meaning they dissolve easily in water. This makes it much easier for babies and toddlers to swallow compared to traditional pills.
In line with recent health guidelines in Nigeria, dispersible tablets are preferred over multi-dose syrups because they provide a more precise and stable dose for your child.
Dosage and Administration (5kg to <15kg)
The standard treatment is a 6-tablet course taken over three days.
- Day 1: Give 1 tablet immediately, followed by 1 tablet 8 hours later.
- Day 2: Give 1 tablet in the morning and 1 tablet in the evening.
- Day 3: Give 1 tablet in the morning and 1 tablet in the evening.
To ensure the medication is properly absorbed, it should be taken with milk or a fatty meal. If your child vomits within 1 hour of taking the dose, you should repeat the dose.
How to Prepare the Dose
- Place the tablet in a small cup or spoon.
- Add a small amount of clean water (about 10ml).
- Wait about 30 seconds for the tablet to dissolve.
- Give the sweet-flavored suspension to the child immediately.
