Fansidar Combi (Sulfadoxine/Pyrimethamine) for Malaria Prevention
Fansidar Combi is a trusted antimalarial drug used across Nigeria. It contains a fixed-dose combination of Sulfadoxine (500mg) and Pyrimethamine (25mg). This medication is primarily used for the prevention of malaria, especially during pregnancy.
Intermittent Preventive Treatment in Pregnancy (IPTp)
In Nigeria, Fansidar Combi is the recommended treatment for Intermittent Preventive Treatment in pregnancy (IPTp). Healthcare providers administer it during routine antenatal care (ANC) visits starting from the second trimester. It helps protect both the mother and the baby from the dangerous effects of malaria.
How Fansidar Combi Works
Fansidar is an antifolate combination. The two active ingredients work together to stop the malaria parasite (Plasmodium falciparum) from reproducing in the blood.
- Sulfadoxine inhibits the growth of the parasite.
- Pyrimethamine prevents the parasite from multiplying.
Dosage and Usage
For prevention in pregnancy, the standard dosage is a single dose of three tablets. This should be taken under the supervision of a healthcare professional at scheduled intervals. For acute treatment, although rarely used now due to resistance, the dosage is also typically three tablets taken once.
