What is Lomotil and What is it Used For?
Lomotil Tablets 2.5mg are a clinically proven treatment for managing both acute and chronic diarrhea. In Nigeria, it is frequently used to treat what is commonly called "runny stomach" or frequent loose stools. Lomotil is a combination medication that helps restore normal bowel function by slowing down the movement of the intestines.
How Lomotil Works
Lomotil contains two active ingredients:
- Diphenoxylate Hydrochloride (2.5mg): This is the primary antidiarrheal component. It works by acting on the muscles of the gut to decrease the speed of peristalsis (intestinal movement).
- Atropine Sulfate (0.025mg): This is included in a small dose to prevent misuse of the medication.
By slowing down the gut, Lomotil allows the body more time to absorb essential fluids and electrolytes from the waste, which helps to firm up the stool and reduce the frequency of bowel movements.
Lomotil vs Loperamide (Imodium)
A common question among users is the difference between Lomotil and Loperamide (Imodium). While both are effective for diarrhea, Lomotil is a Prescription Only Medicine (POM) and is often considered for more persistent or chronic cases. Unlike Loperamide, which is widely available over-the-counter, Lomotil requires a doctor's prescription due to its controlled nature.
Dosage and Administration
Lomotil must be taken exactly as directed by your doctor.
- Adults: The typical starting dose is two tablets four times a day. Once symptoms are under control, the dosage is usually reduced.
- Hydration: Always take this medication with plenty of water. Diarrhea can lead to dehydration, so using Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) alongside Lomotil is highly recommended.
Safety Information and Side Effects
Lomotil is generally not recommended for children under 13 years of age without specific medical advice. Common side effects may include dizziness, drowsiness, or dry mouth. If you experience significant drowsiness, avoid driving or operating machinery.
It is important to note that Lomotil is not a treatment for "toilet infection" (a local term often referring to UTIs or vaginal infections). If you have symptoms like itching or burning, please consult a GoMed pharmacist for a proper diagnosis.
