Nizoral 200mg Tablets (Ketoconazole) – Important Safety Update
Nizoral 200mg tablets contain Ketoconazole, a powerful antifungal medication. Historically, it was used for serious systemic fungal and yeast infections.
Important Regulatory Notice: As of July 2024, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has discontinued the registration and sale of oral ketoconazole tablets in Nigeria. This decision follows global safety concerns regarding the high risk of hepatotoxicity (severe liver damage) and adrenal insufficiency associated with oral use.
Why was Nizoral Tablet restricted?
The restriction applies only to the oral tablets. Topical versions like Nizoral Shampoo and creams remain safe for use. The tablets were found to carry a significantly higher risk of liver failure compared to other antifungal treatments.
Nizoral for "Toilet Infection"
In Nigeria, Nizoral was often sought for "toilet infections" (systemic candidiasis). Due to the current NAFDAC status and safety risks, it is no longer recommended for this purpose.
