Postinor-2 (Levonorgestrel) 0.75mg x 2 Tablets
Postinor-2 is a trusted emergency contraceptive pill (ECP), widely known in Nigeria as the "morning-after pill" or "Plan B." It contains 0.75mg of Levonorgestrel, a progestogen that helps prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse or when a regular contraceptive method fails (like a burst condom).
In Nigeria, Postinor-2 is distributed by the Society for Family Health (SFH) and manufactured by Gedeon Richter Plc. It is NAFDAC registered (No. 04-6985).
How Postinor-2 Works
Postinor-2 works primarily by delaying or preventing ovulation (the release of an egg). If ovulation has already occurred, it may also prevent fertilization.
Does Postinor-2 work during ovulation?
While Postinor-2 is highly effective, its primary mechanism is delaying ovulation. If you have already ovulated, it may be less effective. However, it should still be taken as soon as possible for the best chance of prevention. It is not an abortion pill and will not terminate an existing pregnancy.
How to Identify Original Postinor-2 in Nigeria
Due to counterfeit alerts from NAFDAC in 2025 and 2026, it is crucial to verify your medication:
- SFH Scratch-Off Pin: Every genuine pack from the Society for Family Health has a security scratch-off area.
- Verification Code: Scratch the silver panel and text the code to the shortcode provided on the pack to confirm authenticity.
- Packaging Details: Check for misspellings like "Veify" instead of "Verify" or "Distnibuted" instead of "Distributed," which have been found on fake packs.
- NAFDAC Number: Ensure the NAFDAC Reg No. 04-6985 is clearly printed.
Dosage: How to Take Postinor-2
For maximum efficacy, take the first tablet as soon as possible, ideally within 12 to 24 hours, and no later than 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex.
Two common ways to take it:
- Split Dose: Take one 0.75mg tablet immediately and the second tablet exactly 12 hours later.
- Single Dose: Taking both tablets (1.5mg) at once is also common and may improve compliance if you are worried about forgetting the second dose.
If you vomit within 2 hours of taking a tablet, contact a GoMed pharmacist or your doctor for a repeat dose.
Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Nausea or vomiting
- Fatigue and dizziness
- Headache
- Changes in your next period (it may be slightly early or late)
If your period is delayed by more than 7 days, it is recommended to take a pregnancy test or speak with a GoMed pharmacist for advice.
