What is Fortified Procaine Penicillin Injection?
Fortified Procaine Penicillin Injection 4 Mega IU is a potent, long-acting antibiotic combination widely used in Nigeria for treating moderately severe bacterial infections. This "fortified" version is specially formulated with two types of penicillin: Procaine Benzylpenicillin, which provides a slow, sustained release for up to 24 hours, and Benzylpenicillin Sodium, which ensures a rapid initial peak in the bloodstream to start fighting the infection immediately.
Uses and Indications
This injection is primarily indicated for infections caused by organisms sensitive to penicillin. In Nigerian clinical practice, it is commonly used for:
- Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): It is a standard treatment for syphilis and gonorrhea.
- Respiratory Tract Infections: Including pneumococcal pneumonia and severe tonsillitis (strep throat).
- Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Such as erysipelas and cellulitis.
- Other Conditions: Including scarlet fever, anthrax, and as a supportive treatment for diphtheria.
Many patients in Nigeria also refer to these conditions as "toilet infections." While it is effective for many such infections, a proper diagnosis from a healthcare provider is essential.
Dosage and Administration
Fortified Procaine Penicillin comes as a dry powder in a vial and must be reconstituted with Sterile Water for Injection by a trained healthcare professional.
- Route: It must be administered only via Deep Intramuscular (IM) Injection, typically in the buttock or large muscle.
- Important Warning: This medication must never be given intravenously (IV). An IV injection can lead to dangerous reactions, including embolic toxic reactions or procaine toxicity.
How long does it take to work?
Thanks to the "fortified" component (Benzylpenicillin Sodium), the medication starts working shortly after injection to reach effective levels. The Procaine component then maintains these levels in your body for about 24 hours.
Precautions
Before receiving this treatment, notify your doctor or GoMed pharmacist if:
- You have ever had an allergic reaction to penicillin or procaine.
- You have a history of asthma or kidney problems.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Always complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by your doctor, even if your symptoms improve quickly, to prevent the infection from returning.
