What is Questra (Cholestyramine)?
Questra is a medication containing Cholestyramine Resin, a bile acid sequestrant. It is available as a powder for oral suspension, typically in packs of 10 sachets. Questra is widely used in Nigeria as a high-quality generic alternative to the Questran brand.
What is Questra used for?
Questra is prescribed for several conditions:
- Lowering Cholesterol: It helps reduce High Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels in the blood, reducing the risk of heart disease.
- Relieving Itching (Pruritus): It treats itching associated with partial biliary obstruction or primary biliary cirrhosis.
- Managing Diarrhea: It is effective for diarrhea caused by bile acid malabsorption, often seen after certain bowel surgeries (like ileal resection) or in Crohn's disease.
How Questra Works
Questra works by binding to bile acids in your digestive tract. This prevents them from being reabsorbed into the bloodstream. In response, your liver uses up more cholesterol to produce new bile acids, which naturally lowers your body's cholesterol levels.
How to Take Questra
Questra powder must never be taken in its dry form. Each 4g sachet should be mixed with at least 120ml to 180ml of water, fruit juice, or other non-carbonated liquids. For the best results, follow the dosage instructions provided by your doctor or contact a GoMed pharmacist for guidance.
Possible Side Effects
The most common side effect of cholestyramine is constipation. Other effects may include bloating, gas, or nausea. It is recommended to increase your intake of fluids and fiber while taking this medication.
