Sufratulle Framycetin Sulfate Dressing
Sufratulle is a medicated, non-adhesive primary wound dressing widely used in Nigeria for managing infected skin injuries. Each sterile gauze is impregnated with Framycetin Sulfate (1%), a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic that helps eliminate bacteria at the site of injury.
Often referred to by the brand name Sofratulle, this dressing provides a protective barrier that promotes faster healing by maintaining a moist environment. Its paraffin base ensures the dressing does not stick to the wound bed, making dressing changes significantly less painful and reducing trauma to new skin growth.
Key Benefits of Sufratulle
- Effective Infection Control: Contains Framycetin Sulfate to target and kill bacteria in burns and wounds.
- Non-Adherent Gauze: The paraffin coating prevents the dressing from sticking, ensuring painless removal.
- Promotes Healing: Helps maintain an ideal moist environment for skin regeneration.
- Versatile Application: Highly effective for minor burns, scalds, leg ulcers, and skin grafts.
How to Apply Sufratulle (Sofratulle)
Proper application is essential for wound safety and effective healing:
- Clean the Wound: Gently wash the affected area with sterile water or saline. Pat the surrounding skin dry with a clean towel.
- Prepare the Dressing: Open the sterile pouch. If necessary, use sterile scissors to cut the Sufratulle gauze to the exact size of the wound.
- Application: Place the medicated gauze directly onto the wound surface.
- Secondary Dressing: Cover the Sufratulle with a sterile pad or cotton wool to absorb any fluid, then secure it with a bandage or surgical tape.
- Changing the Dressing: Replace the dressing daily. If the wound is dry, your healthcare provider may recommend changing it every 2-3 days.
Safety and Precautions
- Allergic Reactions: Do not use Sufratulle if you have a known allergy to Framycetin, Neomycin, or Lanolin (the dressing base).
- Usage Duration: Avoid using the dressing for more than 7 days unless directed by a doctor, as prolonged use can lead to antibiotic resistance.
- Seek Medical Advice: If the wound shows no signs of healing, develops a foul odor, or if you develop a fever, contact a GoMed pharmacist or your doctor immediately.
