What is Today Vaginal Contraceptive Sponge?
Today Sponge is a soft, disposable, and hormone-free vaginal contraceptive. It combines a physical barrier with a spermicide to help prevent pregnancy. Each sponge contains 1,000mg of Nonoxynol-9, a widely used spermicide. It is designed to fit comfortably against the cervix, providing continuous protection for up to 24 hours, even with repeated acts of intercourse.
How it Works
The Today Sponge works in three ways to provide reliable protection:
- Physical Barrier: It blocks the cervix to prevent sperm from entering the uterus.
- Absorption: The polyurethane foam absorbs sperm.
- Spermicide: It releases Nonoxynol-9 to chemically deactivates sperm.
Key Benefits
- Hormone-Free: A great option for women who prefer or need non-hormonal birth control.
- 24-Hour Protection: Once inserted, it provides protection for a full day without needing to be changed.
- Discreet & Convenient: Can be inserted hours before intercourse, allowing for spontaneity.
- No Prescription Needed: Available over-the-counter for immediate access.
- Latex-Free: Safe for those with latex sensitivities.
How to Use Today Sponge
To ensure effectiveness, follow these steps:
- Activate: Moisten the sponge with about two tablespoons of clean water and squeeze it gently until it becomes sudsy. This activates the spermicide.
- Insert: Fold the sides of the sponge and insert it deep into the vagina with the dimple side facing the cervix.
- Wait: Leave the sponge in place for at least 6 hours after the last act of intercourse.
- Remove: Do not wear the sponge for more than 30 hours in total. Gently pull the loop to remove and dispose of it.
