What is Symbicort 160/4.5mcg Inhaler?
Symbicort 160/4.5 is a prescription-only combination inhaler used for the long-term management of asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). It contains two active ingredients: Budesonide (an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid) and Formoterol Fumarate Dihydrate (a long-acting bronchodilator).
Unlike "rescue" inhalers that provide immediate relief during an attack, Symbicort is primarily used as a daily maintenance medication to prevent symptoms like wheezing and shortness of breath.
How Symbicort Works
- Budesonide: Reduces and prevents swelling and inflammation in the airways.
- Formoterol: Relaxes the muscles in the airways to help you breathe more easily. Its rapid onset makes it unique among long-acting bronchodilators.
How to use the Symbicort Turbuhaler
The Turbuhaler is a breath-actuated dry powder inhaler. To use it correctly:
- Unscrew and lift off the cover.
- Hold the inhaler upright and turn the red grip as far as it will go in one direction, then back again until you hear a "click".
- Breathe out gently (away from the inhaler).
- Place the mouthpiece between your teeth and close your lips.
- Breathe in forcefully and deeply through your mouth.
- Remove the inhaler and hold your breath for about 5-10 seconds.
- Always rinse your mouth with water after use to prevent oral thrush.
Safety Information
Symbicort should be used exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It is generally not intended for sudden asthma attacks unless specifically advised as part of a Maintenance and Reliever Therapy (MART) plan. If you experience worsening symptoms, contact your doctor or consult a GoMed pharmacist for guidance.
Common side effects may include a mild sore throat, coughing, or a "pepperish" sensation in the throat.
Storage
Store your Symbicort inhaler below 30°C and keep the cap tightly closed to protect it from moisture.
