Coartem is a leading Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy (ACT) used for the treatment of acute, uncomplicated malaria. This 18-tablet presentation is specifically designed for children and adolescents weighing between 25 kg and less than 35 kg. It is manufactured by Novartis, ensuring high quality and efficacy.
How It Works
Coartem contains two active ingredients: Artemether and Lumefantrine. These work together to quickly clear malaria parasites from the blood. Artemether provides rapid relief by reducing the parasite load, while Lumefantrine has a longer half-life to clear remaining parasites and prevent recurrence.
Dosage and Administration
For children in the 25kg to <35kg weight bracket, the standard regimen is 6 doses over 3 days:
- Day 1: 3 tablets immediately, then 3 tablets after 8 hours.
- Day 2: 3 tablets in the morning and 3 tablets in the evening.
- Day 3: 3 tablets in the morning and 3 tablets in the evening.
It is recommended to take the tablets with a fatty meal or milk to improve absorption. Even if the child feels better sooner, the full 3-day course must be completed to ensure the infection is fully cleared.
