Imiquad Imiquimod Cream 5%
Imiquad is a topical cream containing 5% Imiquimod, an immune response modifier manufactured by Glenmark Pharmaceuticals. Unlike many other topical treatments, Imiquad does not directly burn off the affected skin. Instead, it works by stimulating your body's own immune system to produce natural substances that help fight the underlying condition.
What is Imiquad Cream used for?
In Nigeria, Imiquad is primarily prescribed for the treatment of:
- External Genital and Perianal Warts: Caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV).
- Actinic Keratosis: Rough, scaly patches on the skin caused by years of sun exposure.
- Superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma: A type of skin cancer, typically used when surgery is not the preferred option.
How to use Imiquad 5% Cream
The cream is packaged in single-use sachets (0.25g each) to ensure the active ingredient stays effective. Once a sachet is opened, it should be used immediately and any remaining cream discarded.
- For Warts: Usually applied 3 times a week (e.g., Monday, Wednesday, Friday) before going to bed. Leave it on the skin for 6 to 10 hours before washing it off with mild soap and water.
- Important: Always wash your hands before and after application. Avoid sexual contact while the cream is on the skin as it can weaken condoms and diaphragms.
What to expect
It is common to experience some redness, itching, or a "peppering" (burning) sensation at the application site. This is often a sign that your immune system is responding to the treatment. However, if the reaction becomes too painful or severe, you should contact a GoMed pharmacist or your doctor for advice.
