Mydriacyl Eye Drops 1% 5ml – For Pupil Dilation and Eye Exams
Mydriacyl Eye Drops (1% Tropicamide) is a sterile ophthalmic solution used primarily by eye care professionals to dilate the pupil (mydriasis) and temporarily relax the eye's focusing muscles (cycloplegia). Manufactured by Alcon, it is a standard tool for comprehensive eye examinations and certain pre-operative procedures.
How Mydriacyl Eye Drops Work
The active ingredient, Tropicamide, is an anticholinergic agent. It works by blocking the muscarinic receptors in the eye, which causes the iris sphincter muscle to relax (dilating the pupil) and prevents the ciliary muscle from focusing. This allows eye doctors to clearly examine the retina, optic nerve, and other internal structures of the eye.
Key Uses and Indications
- Diagnostic Examinations: Used for fundoscopy and cycloplegic refraction tests to ensure accurate vision prescriptions.
- Pre-operative Preparation: Essential for preparing the eye for various surgical procedures.
- Retinal Assessment: Facilitates a better view of the back of the eye during clinical check-ups.
Directions for Use
Mydriacyl should be used strictly under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
- Wash your hands thoroughly before application.
- Usually, 1 or 2 drops are instilled 15–30 minutes before the examination.
- Avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface to maintain sterility.
- Gently press the corner of the eye (near the nose) for 1 minute after application to reduce systemic absorption.
Important Safety Information and Side Effects
- Blurred Vision: Expect temporary blurred vision and difficulty focusing on near objects.
- Light Sensitivity: Your eyes will be more sensitive to bright light while dilated; wearing sunglasses is recommended.
- Driving Warning: Do not drive, operate heavy machinery, or engage in hazardous activities until your vision has fully returned to normal.
