Postinor-2 (Levonorgestrel) 0.75mg x 2 Tablets
Postinor-2 is a widely used emergency contraceptive pill (ECP) in Nigeria, often called the "morning-after pill." It contains 0.75mg of Levonorgestrel per tablet and is designed to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure (e.g., missed pills or broken condoms).
Distributed by the Society for Family Health (SFH) and manufactured by Gedeon Richter Plc, Postinor-2 is NAFDAC-registered (Reg No. 04-6985).
How Postinor-2 Works
It works primarily by delaying or preventing ovulation. It may also prevent fertilization of an egg. It is not an abortion pill; it will not end an established pregnancy.
Efficacy and Timing
The sooner you take Postinor-2, the more effective it is:
- Within 24 hours: ~95% effective.
- 25–48 hours: ~85% effective.
- 49–72 hours: ~58% effective. After 72 hours, its effectiveness drops significantly, but you should still consult a GoMed pharmacist for advice.
Dosage: How to Take Postinor-2
There are two clinically accepted ways to take the 2-tablet pack:
- Split Dose: Take the first tablet immediately (within 72 hours) and the second tablet exactly 12 hours later.
- Single Dose: Take both tablets (1.5mg total) at once. This is often recommended to ensure the full dose is taken if you might forget the second tablet.
If you vomit within 2 hours of taking a dose, you must take a replacement tablet. Contact GoMed for assistance.
How to Identify Original Postinor-2 in Nigeria
Counterfeit Postinor-2 is common. To ensure safety, look for:
- SFH Scratch Card: Genuine packs have a silver scratch panel. Scratch it and text the code to the number provided to verify authenticity.
- NAFDAC Number: Ensure 04-6985 is printed clearly.
- Batch Alert: Avoid batches T36184B and 332, which NAFDAC has identified as fakes.
- Spelling Checks: Fake packs often have errors like "Veify" (instead of Verify) or "Distnibuted" (instead of Distributed).
Side Effects
You may experience nausea, fatigue, dizziness, or a headache. Your next period might also be a few days early or late. If your period is delayed by more than 7 days, take a pregnancy test.
