What is Santen Cosopt Eye Drop?
Santen Cosopt is a sterile ophthalmic solution prescribed to reduce elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients suffering from open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. This medication is typically recommended when single-agent treatments (monotherapy) are not sufficient to manage eye pressure.
How it Works
Cosopt contains two active ingredients that work together to lower eye pressure:
- Dorzolamide Hydrochloride: A carbonic anhydrase inhibitor that reduces the production of fluid (aqueous humor) in the eye.
- Timolol Maleate: A beta-blocker that also decreases fluid production through a different biological pathway.
By combining these two agents, Cosopt provides a more effective reduction in intraocular pressure compared to either drug used alone.
How to Use Cosopt Eye Drops
The standard dosage for Cosopt is one drop in the affected eye(s) twice daily, typically in the morning and evening. It is important to follow your doctor’s instructions carefully.
To apply the drops:
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
- Tilt your head back and pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket.
- Hold the dropper above the eye and squeeze out one drop.
- Close your eyes for a minute and apply gentle pressure to the corner of the eye near the nose to prevent the medicine from draining out.
Important Storage Information for Nigeria
Due to the high temperatures often experienced in Nigeria, it is recommended to store Santen Cosopt in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Once the bottle is opened, the solution must be used or discarded within 28 days to ensure sterility and effectiveness.
