Product Overview

Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the tetracycline class. It is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, thereby preventing their growth and spread. Doxycycline is effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

Indications

Doxycycline is prescribed for the treatment of:

• Respiratory Tract Infections: Pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis.
• Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Including acne and infected wounds.
• Sexually Transmitted Infections: Such as chlamydia and syphilis.
• Malaria Prevention: Used as prophylaxis in areas with chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum.

Dosage and Administration

• Adults:

  • Initial dose: 200 mg on the first day, given as a single dose or 100 mg twice daily.
  • Maintenance dose: 100 mg once daily or as prescribed.

• Children Over 8 Years:

  • Dosage is weight-based, typically 2 mg/kg per day in one or two divided doses.

• Malaria Prophylaxis:

  • 100 mg once daily, starting 1-2 days before travel and continuing for 4 weeks after leaving the area.

• Administration:

  • Take with a full glass of water to reduce the risk of esophageal irritation.
  • Avoid lying down for at least 30 minutes after taking the capsule.
  • Best taken on an empty stomach, but if it causes stomach upset, it can be taken with food (avoiding dairy).

Precautions

• Not for Pregnant Women: Doxycycline may harm fetal development and is contraindicated during pregnancy.
• Children Under 8 Years: Should be avoided unless absolutely necessary, as it can cause permanent tooth discoloration.
• Sun Sensitivity: May increase sensitivity to sunlight. Use sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors.
