Ginkgo biloba has two primary active ingredients at varying concentrations: terpene lactones (including ginkgolides and diterpenes) and ginkgo flavone glycosides (containing ginkgetin, bilobetin, and sciadopitysin).
- Best known for potentially keeping memory sharp. - Laboratory studies have shown that ginkgo improves blood circulation and acts as an antioxidant. - May improve vein and eye health.
- May cause headache, dizziness, heart palpitations, upset stomach, constipation, or allergic skin reactions. - Not recommended for pregnant or nursing women. Consult with a physician if taking medications (especially anticonvulsants, antidepressants).
- If taking for memory impairment, cardiovascular function, or poor circulation, take 120 to 240 mg per day in two or three divided doses. - For tension glaucoma, use 40 mg of ginkgo biloba daily for up to 4 weeks.
