What is Canesten Thrush External Cream?
Canesten Thrush External Cream is a double-strength antifungal treatment containing Clotrimazole (2% w/w). Manufactured by Bayer, it is specifically formulated to provide fast relief from the external itching, soreness, and burning sensations caused by vaginal thrush in women and thrush (balanitis) in men.
Unlike standard 1% antifungal creams, this 2% formulation is designed to target the intense irritation associated with yeast infections.
Key Benefits & Uses
- Relieves Itching & Soreness: Quickly soothes external genital irritation.
- Treats Men & Women: Effective for candidal vulvitis (women) and candidal balanitis (men).
- Prevents Re-infection: Can be used to treat a sexual partner even if they have no symptoms, helping to stop the cycle of infection.
- Double Strength: Contains 2% Clotrimazole for effective relief of symptoms.
How to Use Canesten External Cream
- Wash and dry your hands before and after application.
- Apply the cream thinly and evenly to the affected area (the vulva for women or the end of the penis for men) 2 to 3 times a day.
- Gently rub the cream in.
- Continue treatment for one to two weeks to ensure the infection is cleared.
Note: This cream treats external symptoms only. If you have internal vaginal thrush, it should be used as an adjunct to internal treatments like Canesten pessaries or internal creams.
Precautions
- Contraception: This cream contains oils that may damage latex condoms and diaphragms, making them less effective.
- Pregnancy: If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor or a GoMed pharmacist before use.
- Irritation: If you experience a burning sensation or increased redness, discontinue use and speak with a healthcare provider.
For personalized advice on treating "toilet infections" or persistent itching, you can always contact a GoMed pharmacist.
