What is Dermovate Ointment?
Dermovate Ointment contains Clobetasol Propionate (0.05% w/w), a very high-potency topical corticosteroid. It is formulated to provide relief for the most resistant inflammatory skin conditions. Unlike the cream variant, the ointment base is particularly effective for dry, scaly, or thickened areas of skin as it helps retain moisture while delivering the active medication.
Key Uses & Benefits
Dermovate is prescribed for adults and children over 1 year old for the short-term treatment of:
- Psoriasis: Excluding widespread plaque psoriasis.
- Recalcitrant Eczemas: Severe forms of eczema that do not respond to milder steroid creams.
- Lichen Planus: A condition that causes itchy, flat-topped bumps on the skin.
- Discoid Lupus Erythematosus: An autoimmune skin condition causing red, scaly patches.
By reducing the chemicals that cause inflammation, Dermovate helps to significantly decrease swelling, redness, and the intense itching associated with these conditions.
How to Apply Dermovate Ointment
- Apply a thin layer to the affected area 1 or 2 times daily.
- Gently rub it into the skin.
- Wash your hands after application unless your hands are the area being treated.
- Do not use for more than 4 weeks without consulting your doctor or a GoMed pharmacist.
Precautions and Side Effects
Due to its potency, Dermovate should not be used on the face, groin, or underarms unless specifically directed by a specialist. Prolonged use can lead to skin thinning (atrophy) or stretch marks. Always consult a healthcare professional if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before use.
If you have questions about whether this treatment is right for your skin condition, you can contact a GoMed pharmacist for expert guidance.
