What is Emzor Erythro 250mg/5ml Suspension?
Emzor Erythro is a macrolide antibiotic containing Erythromycin (250mg per 5ml), manufactured by Emzor Pharmaceutical Industries Limited in Nigeria. It is a widely used "antibiotic syrup" for treating various bacterial infections in children and adults. It is frequently prescribed as a safe alternative for patients with penicillin allergies.
This medication is supplied as a powder for oral suspension and must be reconstituted (mixed with water) by a pharmacist before use. It is primarily used to treat infections of the respiratory tract, skin, and ears.
Uses of Emzor Erythro 250mg/5ml
Emzor Erythro is effective against a broad range of Gram-positive and some Gram-negative bacteria. Common conditions treated with this suspension include:
- Respiratory Tract Infections: Including bronchitis, pneumonia, and pharyngitis (sore throat or "heavy chest").
- Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Such as boils, abscesses, and infected wounds.
- Ear Infections: Particularly otitis media (middle ear infection) in children.
- Alternative for Penicillin Allergy: Used when patients cannot take penicillin-based antibiotics like Amoxicillin.
Preparation and Storage
Emzor Erythro comes as a dry powder. Once mixed with water, it becomes a 50ml liquid suspension.
Important Storage Instructions:
- Refrigeration is Mandatory: After reconstitution, the mixed liquid must be kept in a refrigerator (between 2°C and 8°C).
- Shelf Life: Any remaining suspension must be discarded after 7 to 10 days. Do not use the medicine if it has been sitting at room temperature for an extended period after mixing.
Dosage and Administration for Children
The dosage of Emzor Erythro depends on the child's age, weight, and the severity of the infection. It is usually taken four times a day (every 6 hours) or as directed by your doctor.
- Bitter Taste: Erythromycin has a naturally bitter taste. While the suspension is flavored to make it more palatable for children, some kids may still find it "pepperish" or bitter.
- Complete the Course: Even if the child feels better within 48 hours, you must finish the full bottle as prescribed to ensure the infection is completely cleared and to prevent antibiotic resistance.
If you have any questions about the dosage or how to give this medicine to your child, please contact a GoMed pharmacist for professional advice.
Note: Emzor Erythro is a Prescription Only Medicine (POM). It should only be used under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
