What is Franol X used for?
Franol X is a bronchodilator medicine widely used in Nigeria for managing respiratory conditions like bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. It works by opening up the airways (bronchi), helping to relieve symptoms such as wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.
How Franol X Works
This medication contains two active ingredients that provide combined respiratory support:
- Theophylline (120mg): A xanthine derivative that relaxes the smooth muscles in the airways to improve airflow.
- Ephedrine Hydrochloride (11mg): A sympathomimetic agent that acts as a bronchodilator and helps reduce swelling in the respiratory passages.
Franol Dosage for Adults and Children
For adults and children over 12 years, the typical dosage is one tablet every 4 to 6 hours as needed.
- Do not exceed 4 tablets in a 24-hour period unless directed by a doctor.
- It is recommended to take the last dose a few hours before bedtime, as the stimulatory effects of ephedrine may cause difficulty sleeping.
- If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but skip it if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not double the dose.
Side Effects of Franol Tablets
Common side effects may include:
- Restlessness, anxiety, or insomnia (difficulty sleeping).
- Increased heart rate or palpitations.
- Tremors (shaking) or dizziness.
