Hydrogen peroxide is a mild antiseptic used on the skin to prevent infection of minor cuts, scrapes, and burns. It may also be used as a mouth rinse to help remove mucus or to relieve minor mouth irritation (such as due to canker/cold sores, gingivitis). The main clinical use of hydrogen peroxide is to clean wounds for disinfection in a concentration of 3%. With advances in research, hydrogen peroxide at µM levels has been reported to act as a signaling molecule that drives redox-sensitive signaling mechanisms to improve dermal wound healing.

Precautions and Side Effects

Precautions:

• This product should not be used to treat deep wounds, animal bites, or serious burns.
• Protect hydrogen peroxide from heat, direct sunlight, and UV radiation.

Side Effects:

• Redness, stinging, or irritation at the application site may occur.
• If any of these effects last or get worse, contact your doctor.

Administration

To disinfect, first clean any visible dirt or grime off the area with plain soap and water. Then spray surfaces with a 50/50 mix of peroxide and water. Let it sit for five minutes or longer. Rinse surfaces that touch food, like cutting boards, but let other surfaces air dry.
