Carvedilol is a non-selective beta-blocker with alpha-blocking activity, commonly prescribed for managing hypertension (high blood pressure), angina pectoris (chest pain), and heart failure. Each tablet contains 6.25 mg of carvedilol and is produced by Teva Pharmaceuticals.

Usage Instructions

  1. Dosage:

    • Hypertension:
      • Initial dose: 12.5 mg once daily for the first two days.
      • Maintenance dose: 25 mg once daily.
      • Maximum dose: 50 mg per day.
    • Angina:
      • Initial dose: 12.5 mg twice daily for the first two days.
      • Maintenance dose: 25 mg twice daily.
      • Maximum dose: 100 mg per day.
    • Heart Failure:
      • Initial dose: 3.125 mg twice daily for two weeks.
      • Dose may be gradually increased under medical supervision.
      • Maximum dose: 25 mg twice daily for patients weighing less than 85 kg; 50 mg twice daily for those over 85 kg.
        Note: Dosage should be individualized based on patient response and clinical condition. Always follow the prescribing physician's instructions.
  2. Administration:

    • Swallow tablets whole with a sufficient amount of water.
    • For heart failure patients, take with food to reduce the risk of orthostatic hypotension (dizziness upon standing).
    • Maintain consistent timing each day to ensure even blood levels of the medication.
  3. Missed Dose:

    • If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered unless it is nearly time for the next dose.
    • Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

Precautions

  • Contraindications:
    • Asthma or other bronchospastic conditions.
    • Severe liver impairment.
    • Second or third-degree heart block without a pacemaker.
    • Severe bradycardia (slow heart rate).
    • Cardiogenic shock.
  • Cautions:
    • Monitor blood pressure and heart rate regularly.
    • Use with caution in patients with diabetes, as carvedilol may mask hypoglycemic symptoms.
    • Inform the healthcare provider of any other medications being taken to assess potential interactions.
  • Side Effects:
    • Common: Dizziness, fatigue, hypotension, diarrhea, bradycardia.
    • Serious: Signs of heart failure worsening, severe bradycardia, bronchospasm.
      Seek immediate medical attention if serious side effects occur.
