What is Bactrim Forte 800/160mg?
Bactrim Forte is a double-strength, broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. It is a fixed-dose combination of two active ingredients: Sulfamethoxazole (800mg) and Trimethoprim (160mg). This combination, often called co-trimoxazole, works synergistically to stop the growth of bacteria more effectively than either drug used alone.
In Nigeria, Bactrim Forte is widely prescribed for both routine and complex infections due to its reliable efficacy and "double strength" formulation.
Common Uses in Nigeria
Bactrim Forte is primarily used for:
- Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Often referred to locally as "toilet infection," it provides fast relief from painful urination and related symptoms.
- Respiratory Tract Infections: Including acute bronchitis and middle ear infections (otitis media).
- Gastrointestinal Infections: Such as traveler's diarrhea and shigellosis.
- Pneumocystis Pneumonia (PCP): Prevention and treatment, especially in immunocompromised individuals.
How to Use Bactrim Forte
For adults, the standard dosage for most infections is one tablet every 12 hours (twice daily). It should be taken with a full glass of water. You can take it with or without food, but taking it with food may help if you experience stomach upset.
Important: Always complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by your doctor, even if you feel better after a few days. Stopping early can lead to antibiotic resistance.
Safety and Precautions
- Allergies: Do not use if you are allergic to sulfonamides (sulfa drugs) or trimethoprim.
- Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication to support your kidneys.
- Pregnancy: This medication should be used with caution during pregnancy. Always consult your doctor or a GoMed pharmacist before use.
If you experience a severe skin rash, persistent diarrhea, or difficulty breathing, stop use and seek medical attention immediately.
