What is Floxapen Suspension?
Floxapen Suspension is a narrow-spectrum antibiotic containing flucloxacillin (125mg per 5ml). It belongs to the penicillin group and is specifically designed to treat infections caused by bacteria that are resistant to other penicillins. It is most commonly used for infants and children due to its liquid oral form.
What is Floxapen Suspension Used For?
This antibiotic is highly effective against Gram-positive bacteria, particularly Staphylococcus aureus. Common uses include:
- Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Treatment of boils, abscesses, impetigo, and infected eczema or wounds.
- Respiratory Tract Infections: Relief for tonsillitis, quinsy, pneumonia, and bronchitis.
- Ear Infections: Treatment of otitis externa and otitis media.
- Bone and Joint Infections: Used for conditions like osteomyelitis under medical supervision.
How to Use & Dosage
Floxapen is typically supplied as a powder for oral suspension. A pharmacist will usually reconstitute it with water before dispensing.
- Shake Well: Always shake the bottle well before each dose.
- Timing: For best absorption, it should be taken 30 to 60 minutes before meals.
- Consistency: Space the doses evenly throughout the day as directed by your healthcare provider.
- Complete the Course: It is vital to finish the entire prescribed bottle, even if the child feels better, to prevent antibiotic resistance.
If you are unsure about the correct dosage for your child, please contact a GoMed pharmacist for guidance.
Storage Instructions
Proper storage is critical for the effectiveness of Floxapen syrup:
- Refrigeration: Once mixed with water, the suspension must be stored in a refrigerator (between 2°C and 8°C).
- Shelf Life: Discard any unused medicine after 7 to 14 days, depending on the specific manufacturer's instructions on the label.
- Keep out of reach: Store away from children and do not freeze.
Possible Side Effects
While generally well-tolerated, some children may experience mild side effects:
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Minor skin rashes
If you notice a severe allergic reaction (such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing), stop use immediately and seek emergency medical care. Consult with a professional if your child has a known allergy to penicillin.
