What is Septrin Paediatric Suspension?
Septrin Paediatric Suspension is a widely used broad-spectrum antibiotic for infants and children in Nigeria. It contains a combination of two active ingredients: Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim (together known as Co-trimoxazole). This 120ml oral suspension is formulated to treat a variety of bacterial infections in young children.
Originally developed by GSK, the Septrin brand is now owned by Aspen Pharmacare, maintaining the same trusted clinical formula. It is classified as a Prescription Only Medicine (POM).
Common Uses of Septrin Syrup for Babies and Children
In Nigeria, healthcare providers prescribe Septrin suspension for:
- Respiratory Infections: Treatment of bacterial bronchitis and certain types of persistent coughs.
- Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Effective against bacteria causing bladder or kidney infections.
- Ear Infections (Otitis Media): Commonly used for middle ear infections in toddlers and school-age children.
- PJP Prophylaxis: Prevention and treatment of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia.
Important Note: Septrin is an antibiotic and only works against bacterial infections. It will not treat viral infections like the common cold, flu, or viral coughs.

The dosage of Septrin syrup is determined by the child's age and weight. It is typically administered twice daily (every 12 hours).
