What is the Stop TB Kit?
The Stop TB Kit is a first-line, fixed-dose combination (FDC) antibiotic therapy used in Nigeria specifically for the continuation phase of drug-susceptible tuberculosis (TB) treatment. Each film-coated tablet combines two essential ingredients: Rifampicin (150mg) and Isoniazid (75mg).
This kit is designed to simplify the long-term treatment process by reducing the number of pills a patient needs to take daily. By combining these medications into one tablet, it helps improve adherence to the treatment plan, which is critical for a full recovery and preventing the development of drug-resistant TB.
How it Works
The combination of Rifampicin and Isoniazid works by attacking the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria in two ways:
- Rifampicin: Prevents the bacteria from producing essential proteins.
- Isoniazid: Disrupts the formation of the bacterial cell wall.
Indication and Usage
The Stop TB Kit (150/75) is indicated for the 4-month maintenance or continuation phase of TB treatment, following an initial 2-month intensive phase.
- Standard Dosage: For adults, the typical dose is 3 tablets taken once daily, ideally on an empty stomach (1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal). However, the exact number of tablets is determined by your doctor based on your body weight.
- Treatment Duration: It is vital to complete the full 4-month course even if you feel better earlier.
Safety and Side Effects
- Orange Urine/Tears: Rifampicin commonly causes a harmless reddish-orange discoloration of urine, sweat, and tears. This is expected.
- Liver Health: Patients may require periodic liver function monitoring while on this medication.
- NAFDAC Registered: This is a Prescription Only Medicine (POM) registered in Nigeria.
