What is the Stop TB Kit?
The Stop TB Kit (150mg/75mg) is a first-line, fixed-dose combination (FDC) therapy specifically designed for the continuation phase of Tuberculosis (TB) treatment in adults and adolescents. Each film-coated tablet contains two active ingredients: Rifampicin (150mg) and Isoniazid (75mg).
This kit is part of the standardized TB treatment regimen in Nigeria, often manufactured by Global Drugs & Chemical Industries or Lupin Ltd. The 336-tablet pack is strategically sized to provide a full four-month supply (based on a standard 3-tablet daily dose) to ensure patients can complete their treatment without interruption.
How Stop TB Kit Works
This combination therapy works by targeting Mycobacterium tuberculosis through two different mechanisms:
- Rifampicin: Inhibits the bacteria's RNA synthesis, preventing them from producing essential proteins.
- Isoniazid: Disrupts the formation of the bacterial cell wall.
By combining these into a single tablet, the "pill burden" is reduced, making it easier for patients to adhere to their long-term treatment plan and reducing the risk of developing multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB).
Indication and Dosage
The Stop TB Kit is indicated for the continuation phase of active pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis. It is typically started after the initial two-month "intensive phase" (which usually involves a 4-drug combination).
- Dosage: Your doctor will determine the exact dosage based on your weight. A common adult dosage is 3 tablets daily.
- Administration: It is usually taken once daily, preferably on an empty stomach (1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal) for better absorption.
Important Safety Information
- NAFDAC Registered: This product is a Prescription Only Medicine (POM) registered by NAFDAC for use in Nigeria.
- Treatment Completion: You must complete the entire 4-month course as prescribed by your doctor, even if you start feeling better. Stopping early allows the bacteria to survive and become resistant.
- Orange Discoloration: Rifampicin will cause a harmless orange-red discoloration of your urine, sweat, and tears. This is normal and not a cause for alarm.
- Liver Health: Since these medications are processed by the liver, your healthcare provider may perform periodic liver function tests. Avoid alcohol while taking this medication.
