Cotareg 160 mg/12.5 mg

Overview

Cotareg 160 mg/12.5 mg combines two active ingredients: valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide. Valsartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that helps relax blood vessels, improving blood flow and lowering blood pressure. Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic that helps prevent the body from absorbing too much salt, which can cause fluid retention.

Uses

Cotareg is primarily used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. It is also used for patients who require additional blood pressure control when valsartan alone is not sufficient.

Dosage

  • Standard Dose: One tablet of Cotareg 160 mg/12.5 mg once daily.
  • Adjustments: Dosage may be adjusted based on the patient's response, but should not exceed valsartan/hydrochlorothiazide 320 mg/25 mg daily.

How to Take

  • Administration: Take Cotareg at the same time each day, with or without food.
  • Missed Dose: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s near the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Side Effects

  • Common: Headache, dizziness, fatigue, abdominal pain, cough, diarrhea, nausea.
  • Serious: Angioedema (swelling of face, lips, or throat), severe hypotension, kidney dysfunction, hyperkalemia (high potassium levels), and allergic reactions.
  • Others: Dizziness, dehydration, muscle pain, low sodium levels, and increased blood sugar levels.

Precautions

  • Pregnancy: Not recommended during pregnancy due to potential harm to the fetus. Discontinue use immediately if pregnancy is detected.
  • Renal and Hepatic Impairment: Use with caution in patients with severe renal disease or hepatic impairment.
  • Electrolyte Imbalance: Monitor serum electrolytes periodically as hydrochlorothiazide can cause imbalances such as hypokalemia and hyponatremia.

Interactions

  • Avoid: Combining with aliskiren in patients with diabetes or kidney impairment.
  • Caution: When used with other antihypertensive agents, potassium supplements, or NSAIDs.
  • Other Medications: Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking to avoid potential interactions.

Cotareg is an effective combination therapy for managing hypertension, especially when monotherapy is insufficient. It is crucial to follow medical advice closely and monitor for any adverse effects or interactions. For more information, consult your healthcare provider.
